The developers, landlords, and corrupt politicians are stealing Little Tokyo from right beneath our feet. We are surrounded by LAPD headquarters, Dept of Homeland Security, and Men’s Central Jail. Every corner is swarming with private security and Business Improvement District goons, while the Koban hides an LAPD substation under the guise of its label as a “Visitor Center.” Now with the Metro Regional Connector opening, the policing and violence will continue to escalate. The struggle within our community is very real. Historic First Street North has survived multiple waves of displacement and redevelopment, including the WWII Japanese Amerikan incarceration in concentration camps. The hypocritical profiteers in the JA community claim that: “For 60 years, the name Keiro (“respect for our elders”) has reflected the values of the JA and Japanese community and our commitment to enhance the quality of senior life in Our Community.” Beginning in 1961, Keiro provided culturally sensitive care for the community. The foundation expanded its real estate holdings and services with donations, including many elderly JA’s who signed over their properties towards the end of their lives. In 2016, the Keiro Foundation sold its four senior care facilities to Pacifica for $41 million. The seniors were given a five year grace period and an intentionally ineffective community advisory board. Pacifica chose to designate the Lincoln Heights facility as a Covid-19 site for profit, bringing Covid patients into the home, leading the facility to have one of the worst death rates in the country. Our so-called leaders have always seized the opportunity to betray our community in favor of businesses and developers. In the 1940s, our neighborhoods were forcefully converted into the LAPD’s Parker Center. In the last decade, the city seized our neighborhoods again to expand the Metro. Japanese Village Plaza was sold to Public Storage to host gentrifying businesses like Mokuyobi. Their greed has engineered a commercial “community” that prioritizes wealth to strengthen a violent pattern of displacement. We demand answers from Shawn Miyake, former President and the board. We demand full disclosure of every dollar of Keiro’s sale. We demand transparency from any organization that claims to represent us and their prioritization of the working class and housing insecure. These betrayals cannot continue. Care will not be killed by greed. We do not accept the defeatist refrain of Shikata ga nai. Kenji Suzuki, owner of Suehiro Cafe, has said that he wants to return to Little Tokyo some day. But if we don't start fighting back against predatory landlords and developers, there won't be a Little Tokyo for Kenji to come back to. If Sperl won't listen to our community, then he has no right to do business in our community. More than ten years ago, owner Kenji Suzuki asked his landlord Tony Sperl to renew Suehiro’s long-term lease. Sperl repeatedly told Kenji that he was working on renewing it, only for Sperl to change his mind in 2014 when Metro began constructing a new regional connector in Little Tokyo. Kenji kept paying his rent month-to-month, while Sperl in 2018 quietly filed permits to establish a marijuana dispensary. &nbsp; &nbsp; In 2022, Sperl nearly doubled the rent. Kenji kept mailing his checks, but Sperl refused to cash them, instead filing for eviction in March 2023 on the false claim that Kenji wasn’t paying rent. Sperl withdrew his original false suit in June, but he refused to extend Suehiro’s lease and ultimately evicted them in January 2024. Sperl has been saying that he wants Little Tokyo to transform into a place like Melrose Avenue. Paperwork filed back in 2018 and 2019 indicates (see below) has it he wants to bring in a marijuana dispensary. If left unchecked, landlords and developers like Tony Sperl have the power to completely reshape or “gentrify” Little Tokyo. Mark Falcone and Continuum Partners' incoming Cold Storage luxury development on 4th and Central threatens to fundamentally reshape our neighborhood. Kenji Suzuki, owner of Suehiro Cafe, has said that he wants to return to Little Tokyo some day. But if we don't start fighting back against predatory landlords and developers, there won't be a Little Tokyo for Kenji to come back to. The paper layer should be at least 3 mm thick with none of the bottom of the mold visible. Remove any excess water. (you can dump it back into the bowl) &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; TIP: Place the wet paper between the palms of your hand and squeeze the water out so that you have a relatively flat layer of paper. This will make lining the mold easier!Add compost so that it fills up about half of the open space in the inside of the mold.Add a pinch of seeds.Fill the remaining part of the hole up with compost.Cover the hole with more paper, a lid of sorts closing in the seeds and compost.Close the mold cover to complete forming into the onigiri shape. &nbsp;If the bomb doesn't fill the entire mold, add more paper.Carefully remove the onigiri seed bomb.Soak the “nori” newspaper strips in warm water for 10 min. If we are to bring about revolution, we have to learn how to be revolutionaries. We all have to get used to asking questions, making criticisms, developing theories, and empowering each other to do the same. Remember: the revolutionary method will always be more important than any piece of revolutionary knowledge.&nbsp;So please, use this reading group as a space to practice revolutionary thought.When reading a text, always keep a few questions in mind: What is the author’s argument?
